An inspirational, Oscar-winning documentary about the backup singers who've performed on some of the greatest records of all time. The likes of Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Claudia Linnear, Merry Clayton and Lisa Fischer are hardly household names. But without them, many of the biggest names in pop and rock might have struggled. Veteran music documentary film-maker Morgan Neville tells the amazing true stories of these unsung heroes. Mostly African-American women with a background in gospel music, they lent their powerhouse vocal talents to hits by the likes of Phil Spector, Sting, Elton John and the Rolling Stones. In one of this engrossing film's highlights, Merry Clayton recalls the incredible recording session that produced the Stones' 'Gimme Shelter'. Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger are among the superstars paying tribute. This winner of the 2014 Best Documentary Feature Oscar also reveals the sometimes heart-breaking experiences of backing singers who tried to become stars themselves.
