Prepare to be moved by The Met Opera's highly emotional production of Massenet's heart-breaking masterpiece. Set near Frankfurt in the 1780s, Werther is an overwhelming story of love and desire. Charlotte (Sophie Koch) is engaged to be married - but she is also loved by poet Werther (Jonas Kaufmann). Together, they form one of the most memorable (and tragic) romantic duos in the history of opera. Directed by Richard Eyre - who was also behind The Met's recent hit production of Carmen - and conducted by Alain Altinoglu, Werther is an emotional powerhouse. "It seems to be pointless to do an opera as passionate as Werther," says Eyre, "and not try and reach out and touch the audience... I hope the audience will be absolutely capsized by this production." As the title character, opera star Jonas Kaufmann reunites with Eyre for the third time.
